NSSI cloud migration

Sigmatech's development team migrated the National Security Space Institute's web assets to Cloud One in about one year — well ahead of the 3-4 year industry standard — refactoring over a million lines of code.

Sigmatech's development team successfully migrated the National Security Space Institute's (NSSI) web assets to Cloud One, completing the project in approximately one year — significantly faster than the industry standard of 3-4 years.

Project Scope

The initiative involved moving two decades of web infrastructure, including refactoring over a million lines of code that make up NSSI's web applications and databases. Working with partner Applied Information Sciences (AIS), the team established three cloud environments and secured an Authorization to Operate (ATO).

Key Accomplishments

The migration addressed NSSI's operational challenges, including unpredictable network outages and certificate errors. Sigmatech implemented DoD-standard security practices, universal access capabilities supporting both CISP and NIPR networks, CAC multi-factor authentication, and layered security architecture aligned with DoD DevSecOps initiatives.

Security and Compliance

The ATO approval required navigating complex regulatory requirements due to the handling of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). The authorization had to comply with hundreds more security controls and address multiple federal directives including DoD Instruction 1000.30 and the Privacy Act.

Outcome

The successful transition in January 2023 enabled NSSI to support growing demand for courses and increased student capacity while maintaining enhanced security and operational reliability.
